A suspected arson at an assisted care facility in Jenkins Township forced out dozens of people early Thursday morning, according to authorities. A male tenant in his 60s was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation after allegedly setting fire to a dayroom in a four-story building at River View Personal Care around 3:20 a.m., police said.

A Nanticoke man was arrested Thursday on charges he shot another man in the head along the levee in South Wilkes-Barre last week. Michael Angelo Foschini, 25, of West Main Street, was charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and simple assault, and one count each of possession of marijuana and reckless endangerment.

Vincent Marcario was resting in bed at his home in Kingston, looking forward to the Thanksgiving feast he had stayed up late preparing with his sister, when the day took a tragic turn. Lying in bed, Marcario, 46, had a heart attack that proved fatal.

The Luzerne County District Attorney's office, Butler Township Police and the SPCA of Luzerne County are investigating the deaths of two horses at a boarding facility on Deep Hole Road in Drums. Corrina Mollica, 42, of Dupont, went to the facility with her friend to see her friend's horse that had been boarded at the facility on Nov. 28. She wasn't prepared for what she saw.

A man awaiting sentencing on charges he had 200 pictures of child pornography saved on his cellphone and Kindle Fire was arrested Tuesday on similar charges. Mark Luke Stout, 41, of Oxford Street, Hanover Township, was charged after Luzerne County detectives and the state police Northeast Computer Crime Unit allegedly found numerous images depicting young girls wearing bikinis and lingerie posing in sexual positions on a laptop computer he used.

Tahquierah Thomas, second from left, became a bit of a celebrity among State Street Elementary classmates when state Sen. John Yudichak cited her as an inspiration in efforts to bring the SHINE after school program to Luzerne County's public schools. Yudichak and others came to the school to publicize the start of the program next fall.

The city council approved a second reading of the proposed 2015 budget with amendments holding the real estate property tax at 3.12 mills. The budget, with revenue and expenditures of $9.3 million, would also provide for an increase in police protection.

Some folks in Luzerne County spread some holiday cheer and got to skate just like the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins. We stopped by Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township Wednesday night for the open skate benefiting Toys for Tots.
